McDonald's to Hire 50,000 Employees...in 1 Day

Dubbed as, "National Hiring Day", McDonald's Corporation plans to hire up to 50,000 workers nationwide on April 19. You don't have to wait for that day to submit your job application. You may do it now.

This is probably the more ambitious hiring event of the company since the economic slowdown 3 years ago. Currently, the company has more than 14,000 restaurants and more than 600,000 workers across the United States.

Positions for hire vary from management positions, store crew, and logistics positions according to its website. Management positions can have as high as $50,000 a year salary, and store crew positions can have $8.50 an hour depending on the State you live. Current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.

The McDonald's headquarters complex, McDonald's Plaza,
located in Oak Brook, Illinois.
Although many labor and economic analysts say that it is too early to predict, massive hiring all over the nation is a good sign that the economy is in its way to recovery. Just recently, the US Department of Labor and Statistics announced that there was a gain of 216,000 new jobs created in March alone, pushing the unemployment rate improves by 1% from 9.8% last year to 8.8% this month, the lowest level in 2 years.

So, if you are interested, log on to its website and try your luck. You may find yourself working for this $34 billion company in no time.

The two giants are ramping up workers in preparation for the coming Spring season. As everybody knows Spring is the Christmas for these retail stores and traffic is at its peak during this season. Most of the hiring opportunities are for retail stores and distribution facilities nationwide. They are looking for sales floor associates, backroom stockers, cashiers, parking attendants, flower and garden associates, replenishment specialists, logistics analysts, drivers, etc.

or, if you prefer, visit any of their stores in you area for hiring information and requirements.

Do you think this could be a sign that th economy is getting better? All I know is that the retail industry is slowing to improve since the December last year. One more thing, the US Labor Department has reported that jobless claims has plunged to their lowest level in more than two years. And, unemployment rate fell to 9% in January last month from 9.8 last year.

I think these indicators tell us something about economic improvement as well.

Home Depot Corporate Data:
Revenue:                      US$71.3 Billion
Operating income:         US$4.38 Billion
Net income:                  US$2.26 Billion
Total assets:                 US$41.2 Billion

Does The New RGIS Employment Video a Hit?

Very recently, SnagAjob has released a short employment video courtesy from RGIS LLC. It was uploaded since December last year both for the SnagAjob and YouTube websites.

The employment video is a little over 2 minutes short clip, but it was loaded with lots of interesting stuff.  I said interesting because as of this moment (February 1, 2011 9:55PM Pacific Time), the video has been viewed more than 15,000 times since its initial upload and currently gets 60 views per hour.

It is an upgrade from the traditional and static text-based employment ads by the inventory company and I think that majority of the traffic to the RGIS website right now that are employment related were linked from this video. Demographically, 14,000 out of 15,000 views are coming from United States and the rest were coming outside of the country.

Now, its time to ask this question, "Will the new RGIS employment video a success?" The answer entirely depends to whom the question was asked. If the question was addressed to an RGIS executive, or particularly to Rob Hill, RGIS Vice President in particular, definitely the answer would be a rousing success partly because of the initial traffic results it sends to the RGIS website and the unprecedented number of views it receives.

If  the question was addressed to an RGIS critic, which many from readers of this blog are happened to be or at least inclined to be, of course one will always expect from snide remarks to vitriolic responses. Of course I respect their opinion. But if someone will ask me the same question, here's my response:

I agree that the video is getting tens of thousands of views it deserves and sending traffic to the company's website. It is an employment video and the timing of its release is just about right when the company needs to hire more people for this year's operations. I also believe that it serves as image-building strategy of the company.

But being said that, I would be more interested instead to see on the actual number of successful new hires for both management and field operations since the video caters both for the hourly and salaried. I am also more interested to see on how this strategy can help keep these employees to stick with the company for longer periods instead of the usual cleave then leave hiring practice.

I hope the company will live to what Mr. Rob Hill has said about its employees: "We cannot do anything we do without the people we have on the ground everyday delivering our service." But if nothing changes the way they keep and maintain quality hires, then the company has done little or nothing the way a company should treat its (hourly) employees: To be an employee-friendly company.

US Postal Service Will Shut Down More Than 2000 Retail Branches This Year

A typical USPS contractor semi truck

(This is the author's first post after a short business trip to Korea early this year)

Do you work for the US Postal Service? Well, there is a little problem here.

The US Postal Service plans to shut down more than 2000 postal retail branches and stations this year to minimize an already bleeding financial and fiscal status of the nation's premiere postal service. No, the USPS is not closing any of the bigger post offices but branches that are smaller than post offices such as locations that do not have process mails and where no mail carriers no longer exist.

Aside from economic situation as a main reason for closures, USPS is facing direct competition with internet services such as e-mail, voice, and print messages which have been constantly changing the mail services landscape for the last 15 years.

Closures of thousands of branches mean one thing: unemployment for postal employees and mail contractors in all areas of operations which include but not limited to technical, clerical, maintenance, mail delivery services, and contractors. As of last year, USPS has an estimated 583,908 employees in the country with a net income of negative US$8.51 Billion.

So, for those of you who work for USPS and who think that your local USPS branch is facing a closure notice pretty soon, do not be surprised when your post office HR will talk to you about your employment status with the agency anytime this year. Start mailing out resumes now before USPS mails you out, if you know what I mean.

Unemployment Rate Improves?

Some believed it is improving, some do not. According to a recent data, national unemployment rate improves by a fraction. As of September last month, it improves from 10.10% in September last year to 9.60% this year of the same month.

But US job openings and  hiring seemed to remain pretty much the same this year although there will be a slight surge in the last quarter as evidenced by the seasonal job opportunities and shall remain to linger until the holiday is over.  Being said that, hundreds of thousands of workers are affected by massive layoffs especially in the States of California, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas and Wisconsin.

But if Congress extends the federal unemployment benefit program when it convenes again after the midterm elections, then about 1.2 million workers who have been laid off will benefit it in the next few months.  We hope the economy and employment get better next year.

Some interesting numbers

Top 5 States with the highest unemployment rate:

  • Nevada               14.4%
  • Michigan             13.0%
  • California            12.4%
  • Florida                11.9%
  • South Carolina    11.0%

Top 5 States with the greatest number of massive layoffs:
  • California
  • Florida
  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
  • Texas

Top States with the lowest unemployment rate:
  • North Dakota                3.7%
  • South Dakota                4.6%
  • Nebraska                      4.6%

Macy's to hire 65,000 seasonal associates this year

The former Macy's West flagship store in San Francisco

Hiring starts now
Just last week, Terry Lundgren, Macy's chairman and CEO announced that the company will hire more than 65,000 seasonal workers for the 2010 holiday season. The hiring represents a 3 percent increase from previous years. This ramping up of workers from Macy's and other retail companies such as Toys "R" Us, and Walmart is a positive outlook for retail employment for the last 18 months.

Most positions that Macy's hire for this year's season are part-time which include sales associates, back room stockers, customer service associates, shipment and distribution workers, and online order processors. Hiring for store sales positions will begin this first week of October. Hiring for operations positions already has begun last week.

For RGIS hourly employees, this is also an exciting opportunity to keep a stable income until the holiday is over because as everybody knows, RGIS does not have much work to offer in holiday seasons. In fact, November and December are the lowest months of the year.

Applications are now being accepted online at Macy's website

Did you get your unemployment claims last year?

Every end of the year, RGIS and all RGIS hourly employees are fully aware that at the onset of November until the 3rd week of December, inventories begin to decline. That means no work schedule. And that means no money in your pocket for the holiday season.

Many of hourly employees have to look for another job or another means to augment these slow times. Most of us apply for holiday jobs, some of us may quit from RGIS, some of us just contented with being a couch potato, waiting from the RGIS scheduler to call for work. However, some hourly employees make a smart decision: file an unemployment claim.

Most hourly employees are unaware or shall I say, not fully informed about whether or not such situation qualify us to file unemployment benefits. (Disclaimer: I am only opining based on the existing unemployment laws in the State of Washington that are applicable in this scenario. If you live in a state other than mine, you might want to inquire from your own State's Social Services for more information. Or if you happened to know a lawyer friend who has some knowledge about unemployment laws in your State, you may seek legal advice).

In reality, RGIS hourly employees MAY be qualified to file unemployment claims. Several years now, my friends have been telling me that they file unemployment claims every end of the year. In fact, 3 of my close friends in my D411 District have filed for unemployment claims and they have received checks from the time they have been approved until the last week of December last year! They claimed to have received between 200.00 to 350.00 per week within that 6-week duration period of "unemployment"!

How did they do it? I made a personal inquiry. Here's how: The easiest way to file your claim is through ONLINE. That means, you don't have to fall in line at your local state office and spare yourself from other troubles. So we'll just do it in the comfort of our rooms.
